Class of 2021

Alexandra Damato

Student Speaker
Graduate

To the graduate class of 2021, this past year we have been tested in ways that may not have been imaginable. I wish we could be present in the flesh together to celebrate this day but here we are on zoom again. The upside is that this is a recording so I can’t accidentally mute myself while giving this speech.

All jokes aside, what I have realized over this past year is that we have been forced to take a step back from any kind of routine and normalcy, and collectively pushed in to the unknown where it can often be disorienting and uncomfortable. I do not believe in ignoring the hardships but we do have the right over our own perspectives and there have been some moments worth highlighting - such as the ability to continue our programs online, getting outside more, developing and exploring new hobbies, and making a point to reach out to others in a time of need.

I want you all to take a moment to pay respect and gratitude to those who believed in you, and helped you on your path to where you are today. Also take a moment to recognize those who did not believe in you. Perhaps they were the ones to fuel your passion, resilience, creativity, and grit to get to this point. Do not forget perhaps the most important person to pay gratitude to… you. You are here today because of the countless hours and work you put in to make this day happen.

I want to thank you all for making this time a memorable and enriching experience, especially to the professors who adapted and changed their delivery methods. Please go out and share your passion with the world and be kind to yourself and others. Good luck, and be well.
